Description
This striking ‘Igelkott’ (‘Hedgehog’) vase from the notable ‘Chamott’ (Chamotte) series represents Swedish Modernist design at its finest. Created between 1936-1948 by renowned ceramicist Gunnar Nylund (1904-1997) during his productive period at Rrstrand, the piece showcases the organic modernism that made Scandinavian design internationally acclaimed.
Standing 16 cm (6.2 inches) tall and 13 cm (5.1 inches) wide, the vase showcases a luminous high-gloss cream/beige glaze that dramatically highlights its sculptural, textured surface. Each piece was individually handcrafted, making every vase uniquely expressive.
The juxtaposition of the rugged, heavily textured exterior against the refined glossy finish creates an interesting tactile quality. This masterful balance of raw form and polished execution allows the piece to remain stylistically timeless, as relevant in contemporary interiors as it was innovative in its era.
