Description
Oil on faesite. Signed in the upper right-hand corner, the composition has an antique feel to it and features a group of items placed on a desk: a globe, a balance, a stamp album and a coin collector’s desk, some of which are scattered on the desk, along with small collector’s tools. Born in Milan in 1913, and educated at the Brera Academy (of which he would later become a teacher), Adriano Gajoni was passionate about the study of seventeenth-century Lombard painters and seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish painting, from whose meticulous realism he was inspired. Of strict figurative observance, Il Gajoni preferred landscapes, portraits and especially still lifes, which he expressed in fairy-tale and allegorical compositions. Even the work proposed here recalls the scientific/naturalistic compositions in vogue in the seventeenth-eighteenth century, although here made with elements contemporary to the artist. In frame style.
