Bernard Schultze was born on May 31, 1915 in Schneidemhl in West Prussia (today Pila in Poland). From 1947, Schultze lived in Frankfurt am Main, where the first informal pictures were created from 1951. Bernard Schultze develops a very personal style of gestural abstract painting. In 1952 he was involved in the Quadriga exhibition in the Franck Zimmergalerie in Frankfurt. In 1955 he took part in the exhibition of the group “Zen 49” and the exhibition “Peintures et Sculptures Non-Figurungs en Allenagne dAujourdhui” of the Cercle Volney in Paris. Bernard Schultze was also involved in the exhibition “Living Color – Couleur Vivante” in Wiesbaden in 1957 and in 1957/58 in the exhibition of the Kunsthalle Mannheim “a new direction of painting”.
In 1955 Schultze married the painter Ursula Bluhm. At this time, the first relief images arise from various materials attached to the screen. The “Migofs” followed in 1961 on the so -called “Tabuskris” (Tabulae Scriptae), which change between painting and drawing. Schultze uses this fictitious designation for his sculptural structures that represent art and natural creatures.
From 1951, Bernard Schultze regularly stayed in Paris for some time. In 1964 the first trip to New York, the further follow. In 1968, Schultze moved his residence from Frankfurt to Cologne. In 1972 Schultze became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. In the 1970s, Bernard Schultze again focused on the panel picture. He also integrates into the previously sculptural “Migofs”. From 1974 his work became increasingly large -scale.
Bernard Schultze succeeds in an impressive retirement work, on which he works intensively until shortly before his death. He is one of the great German painters of abstraction in the second half of the 20th century. Bernard Schultze died in Cologne on April 14, 2005.
