Description

Unrtitled is an artwork realized by Gustave Singier (1909-1984). Lithograph , cm 32,5×25. Signed and numbered (copy 44/200) in pencil on the front. Very Good condition. Gustave Singier was born in 1909 in Belgium, in Warneton in Flanders. He spent his childhood in Belgium occupied by the German armies. He began to paint from the age of 14. He follows courses at the Boulle School for three years then until 1936 he works as an interior architecture and furniture designer, in parallel he paints and draws. Singier met the painter Charles Walch who encouraged him and made him discover the freedom of pictorial expression, particularly in the field of colour. from 1936 he took part in the numerous Parisian Salons (Salon d’Automne, Salon des Indpendants, Salon des Tuileries, etc…). He befriends Alfred Manessier and Le Moal, whose research resonates with his sensibility. Since then, Singier’s pictorial evolution will not cease to intersect with that of Manessier, each looking in the other for an objective support for abstract color variations or, on the contrary, for more total freedom. Supported by a poetic dimension, in her art there is an impressionist renewal which however takes into account the Cubist lesson. In 1941 Singier was one of those young artists who presented their work at the “Twenty Painters of the French Tradition” exhibition at the Braun Gallery, an exhibition intended to represent a challenge to the German occupation army. Singier will be in 1945 one of the founding members of the Salon de Mai (May Salon). Like other painters of his generation, Singier discovers Kandinsky, Klee, Mondrian; this new artistic path, will decide Singier to free his painting. Singier’s work separates itself from that of Manessier, finds its specific and personal qualities.By resorting to “tachyst” techniques, his art becomes more fluid, approaching the effects of watercolor, in which the artist has always excelled. Gustave Singier’s work is elegant and delicate. As a painter, the artist will extend his activity in the most varied fields such as: mural painting, tapestries, stained glass windows, mosaics, costumes and sets for theater and opera, burin engravings, lithographs, illustrations of works. He will teach in Paris at the Ranson Academy from 1951 to ’54, then at the School of Fine Arts from ’67 to ’78.Gustave Singier, naturalized French since 1947, died in Paris in 1984.
