Description

THE TRIUMPHS OF MAXIMILIAN I

Wooden engraving (on wooden panel) from 1515, in the 1880 edition, on laid paper and with watermark published in honor of the imperial house of Austria with posthumous manual colouring.

This refined woodcut is part of the Triumphs of Emperor Maximilian I series, a grandiose propaganda project commissioned by the emperor himself at the beginning of the 16th century. These works celebrated his victories, his power, and the magnificence of his court in a style heavily influenced by German Renaissance art.

The Triumphs series was created between 1512 and 1519 for the celebrations of Emperor Maximilian of Germany and remained unfinished upon his death.

The plates were first printed in 1780

Created by Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473-1531), a pupil of DURER, considered one of the greatest artists of the German Renaissance, the work celebrates imperial magnificence through a procession scene with knights, soldiers and banners, inspired by the triumphs of ancient Rome.

Burgkmair, master of engraving and innovator of chiaroscuro woodcut, collaborated with other artists to create this monumental series composed of approximately 140 plates, which exalted the power and glory of Maximilian I. The attention to detail, the richness of the decorations and the technical mastery make this work an extraordinary testimony to the chivalric culture and imperial politics of the Renaissance.

The print is framed in an important golden frame, with a double ivory and midnight blue passepartout with golden profiles.

Dimensions: 88 x 88 cm

As always the print is accompanied by the certificate of authenticity.
