Description

Two pictures in the style of action painting and expressive abstractionism. The varied compositions complement each other to form a diptych.

The paintings fit into the modern trends of expressive abstraction and action painting that developed in America in the mid-twentieth century thanks to Jackson Pollock. The work also has connotations with the work of Lucio Fontana and the assemblage, of which Tadeusz Kantor is an excellent representative.

Jackson Pollock – today one of the best-selling artists in the world. He propagated a new method of painting – dripping – which involved splashing paint onto the canvas, straight from the can. Painting with this technique was called action painting, because it allowed the use of spontaneous, expressive movement and focusing on the recording of the creative act itself, which was the participation of a genius – an artist.

Two vertically arranged canvases present this type of abstraction. On a pure white background, black paint was splashed. Seemingly random lines form a well-thought-out central composition. Despite the same technique, the images are different and complement each other perfectly. The performances can evoke associations with organic forms or a starry constellation.

Irregular, folded canvas gives the paintings a new value and, moreover, creates a reference to the tradition of modern painting – successive trends arising from the trend of expressive abstraction – specific painting limited to cutting the canvas – Lucio Fontana and assemblage, in which normal objects, packaging or canvases themselves became a work of art.
