Description
This tall, narrow panel hails from Zhejiang province in eastern China, where it was originally produced as part of a set of panels that would have been used internally to divide a space. Constructed from beech wood and coloured with a dark, reddish stain, the piece holds five smaller panels set within its frame. A combination of open and relief carvings decorate the larger panels, with central motifs of figures in traditional stories entwined in scrolling floral designs. The two narrower panels feature reliefs of birds and flowers.
